The Beginning of their Water Babies Adventure
For Raina’s family, water safety has always been a priority.
Through her work as a professional mermaid entertainer, her son often joins her on shoots and gigs, meaning he’s around water a lot. Ensuring he understood how to stay safe in and around water was essential, and that’s what ultimately led them to Water Babies Halifax.
Like many parents, Raina tried other extracurricular activities first. She found they weren’t developmentally appropriate and didn’t meet her family’s expectations.
“Water Babies was the antidote”
From First Splash to First Badge
They began their Water Babies journey in summer 2025, and while Trout (her nickname for her little one on social media) was nervous at the beginning, his parents saw his confidence in the water grow week after week. In a handful of lessons, he gained more confidence and learned more than he had in years of other activities.
All his hard work paid off when he proudly earned his first Water Babies badge! The first of many milestones to come.
More than Swimming Lessons
Raina and Trout absolutely love their lessons. Some of their family’s favourite parts include the class size, warm water, and their wonderful teacher, Sophia.
But beyond that, the greatest gift Water Babies Halifax has given them is water safety, which makes the program so valuable to families across Canada.
From the very first lesson and throughout the program, children like Raina’s son are taught essential skills, including floating, safe entry and exit and what to do if they ever unexpectedly fall in. They learn to turn around in the water, reach the nearest surface, and make their way to safety.
Raina highlights the peace of mind it brings her, “knowing my little one understands how to stay safe in and around water is invaluable.”
A Message for Other Parents
Here’s what Raina would say to parents considering Water Babies:
“I wish their program had been available in Halifax when he was younger, but better late than never! The lessons are amazing, and we absolutely love them. I’ll be sad when he grows out of the program, but I’m confident in the fantastic foundation he’s building”.
