Everything You Need to Know About Winter Swimming

Why Swimming Doesn’t Stop in Winter

At Water Babies, our lessons run year-round, even in the winter, when many activities pause because of the weather. Swimming during the colder months is just as safe and beneficial as during any other season. To help you feel confident and ready, we’ve answered some of the most common questions about winter swimming.

Winter Swimming FAQ

Is Winter Swimming Safe for Infants and Toddlers?

Yes! Swimming in winter does not make little ones sick. Colds are caused by viruses, not cold temperatures. The higher risk in winter comes from being around others who are already infected, not from swimming itself.

With a little preparation, winter swimming is just as safe and fun as in any other season:

  • Wrap your little one in a towel, wrap, or robe right after class
  • Dry them thoroughly, including hands, feet, and hair
  • Dress them in warm, dry layers—don’t forget hat, socks and mittens
  • Offer a warm drink or feed after leaving the pool to help regulate body temperature

My Little One is Sick. Should We Skip Class?

It depends. Illnesses are common among young children, especially in winter. Always check with your healthcare provider, but here are some general guidelines:

  • Mild symptoms (runny nose, light cough): your child may still swim.
  • Fever or more serious symptoms: stay home until they feel better.

Tip: Check with your local Water Babies office for policies on missed lessons and make-ups.

Do I Need a Different Swimsuit or Extra Items in Winter?

Our double diaper policy applies year-round, and the essentials are the same: Happy Nappy or Splash Jammers (if they still fit), swim diaper, towels, and more. For winter swims, pack a few extras:

  • Warm layers for after class: hat, earmuffs, mittens, thick socks
  • Blanket for the car or stroller ride home

Tip: Allow an extra 5-10 minutes for changing. Winter layers take a little longer!

Won’t My Baby Get Cold in Winter Lessons?

All Water Babies lessons take place in heated indoor pools, so outside weather doesn’t affect class. Pools are kept warm and comfortable, meeting minimum temperature standards year-round.

What Happens if It’s Snowing or the Roads Are Icy?

Lessons run as normal unless you receive a cancellation notice by text or email. If travelling in snowy or icy conditions, allow extra time and drive carefully.

Are Water Babies Lessons Different in Winter?

No! Our program is the same year-round. We focus on water confidence, safety, swimming skills, and strokes, and our teachers bring the same fun and energy to every class.

Should I Wait Until Spring to Start Lessons?

Not at all. Winter is a great time to start. With outdoor activities on pause, swimming keeps your little one active and, starting now, helps them be confident and ready for summer.

Can Taking a Winter Break Affect My Child’s Progress?

Yes. Children learn best through consistency and repetition. While missing the occasional class is fine, longer breaks can slow progress. After time away, your little one may need extra time to:

  • Rebuild water confidence
  • Re-familiarize with skills
  • Feel comfortable with their teacher and peers

That’s why we recommend swimming year-round.
